History Lesson:

The first 450 Class race at Washougal took place on August 14, 1983. It was a memorable event where Yamaha-mounted Rick Johnson clinched the overall win with impressive 2-1 finishes. Honda’s Bob Hannah won Moto 1, but unfortunately, a broken chain dashed his hopes of victory. This inaugural race also marked the 25th round of the Grand National Championship, embedding Washougal into motocross history.

32 Seasons of History:

Washougal has a rich history, having hosted 125cc & 500cc rounds before the premier 450 class appeared as the 250cc division from 1983 to 1985. After a brief hiatus, Washougal returned to hosting just 125cc & 500cc rounds from 1986 to 1993. The 250cc/450cc class made a comeback in 1994 and has been a staple every season since. This year marks the 33rd 450 Class round at Washougal, and the event will carry added significance as the Military Appreciation Race.

Windham & Washougal:

Over the span of his 8-year dominance in the 450 Class, only four riders managed to defeat the “GOAT” four or more times in overall results. Tim Ferry and David Vuillemin achieved this feat four times each, Sebastian Tortelli five times, and Kevin Windham an impressive eight times. Out of the 12 rounds where Carmichael failed to win, five saw another rider sweep the motos. Interestingly, Windham and Washougal were Carmichael’s kryptonite, with two out of three of his moto sweeps at the Washington track. This makes Washougal the only venue where Carmichael faced multiple 1-1 defeats.

As we look forward to another thrilling weekend at Washougal, these historical insights remind us of the track’s importance and the legends who have left their mark here. Stay tuned for more exciting action and unforgettable moments in this year’s race!
