Kawasaki had yet to develop a 450 and Suzuki was ahead of the curve. I don’t care what your friend says about his “stage 3” 98 CR250. An easy-to-ride broad-powered 450 will walk away from a 250 smoker with professional riders all day. Mix in the AMA’s unleaded gas rule and the advantage was huge.
