Farewell to The Mirage: A Las Vegas Icon Closes Its Doors After 34 Years

This week marks the end of an era as The Mirage Hotel and Casino, a cornerstone of the Las Vegas Strip, closes its doors after 34 memorable years. Since its grand opening in 1989, The Mirage has been a symbol of luxury and entertainment, captivating visitors from around the world with its tropical theme and iconic volcano show.

To commemorate its storied history, The Mirage is hosting a farewell event today, allowing guests and fans to reminisce about the countless memories made within its walls. The doors will officially close this afternoon, marking the conclusion of a weeklong celebration. As a special send-off, gamblers had the chance to participate in a series of events to win a share of a $1.6 million cash prize, adhering to Nevada state law. This final gesture epitomizes the excitement and grandeur that The Mirage has always brought to its patrons.

The announcement of The Mirage’s closure came in May, leaving many to reflect on the impact the resort has had on Las Vegas. The Mirage was not just a hotel; it was a pioneer in themed resorts, setting a new standard for luxury and entertainment in the city. Its lush gardens, dolphin habitat, and the famous erupting volcano have been some of the must-see attractions on the Strip.

While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, the closure of The Mirage also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. The 3,000-room resort is set to undergo a comprehensive three-year renovation. This transformation will erase the tropical theme and all remnants of The Mirage, making way for the Hard Rock Las Vegas.

Scheduled to reopen in 2027, Hard Rock Las Vegas will feature a striking 700-foot-tall hotel tower shaped like a guitar, reminiscent of the iconic Hard Rock property in Florida. This ambitious redesign promises to bring a fresh and modern flair to the Strip, introducing new entertainment options and luxurious accommodations. As part of the renovation, the famous volcano will be removed to make room for additional rooms and amenities.

The Mirage’s closure is a poignant moment for many who have enjoyed its hospitality and entertainment over the decades. It’s a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of Las Vegas, a city that continually reinvents itself to remain the ultimate destination for visitors worldwide.

As we bid farewell to The Mirage, we also look forward to the innovative and exciting future that Hard Rock Las Vegas will bring. The memories created at The Mirage will forever be cherished, and its legacy will continue to be a significant chapter in the history of the Las Vegas Strip.

Thank you, Mirage, for 34 years of unforgettable experiences. Here’s to the future and the new adventures that await with Hard Rock Las Vegas!
